Creating Pathways Through Screenprinting

On Wednesday, we participated in our first hands-on screenprinting workshop in collaboration with Stitching Up Detroit (SUD), a screenprinting cooperative in Southwest Detroit.
We invited one of our community partners, Comsa, a local farm-to-cup coffee business, to join us in learning the screenprinting process to create branded merchandise. Participants worked through the full process, from setting up a carousel to pulling ink across a screen and securing the final product with a heat press.

By bringing SUD’s printing resources together with GLS’s network of community partners, our goal is to create pathways for local organizations to experiment with promotional materials without having to take on barriers like high startup costs or risks associated with investing in new production. For organizations, merchandise can help share identity and build visibility as well as provide new sources of fundraising revenue.
This workshop was part of a larger effort to connect local organizations with tools, skills, and resources to help advance their goals. It reflects GLS’s vision of what becomes possible when community organizations get together to create space for one another to learn, collaborate, and grow.
